India-China Direct Flights to Resume After Five-Year Pause.

India and China have begun formal discussions to resume direct flight operations, which have been suspended since early 2020 due to the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic and escalating border tensions. The move signals a positive shift in bilateral relations and aims to restore crucial air connectivity between the two Asian powerhouses.

Leading carriers such as IndiGo (6E) and Air India (AI) are expected to play a key role in reinstating direct routes between major cities like New Delhi (DEL) and Shanghai (PVG). Both countries are currently working to streamline regulatory processes, including airport slot allocations, ground handling agreements, and other operational protocols necessary for relaunching services.

Before the suspension, airlines from both nations operated direct flights connecting several important business and tourism hubs, including Kolkata, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. However, services to mainland China were completely halted, with only limited operations continuing to destinations like Hong Kong.

The renewed discussions include broader cooperation on aviation matters, such as easing visa processes and facilitating airline crew operations. Officials indicate that while the current bilateral air services agreement remains unchanged, the focus is now on overcoming logistical and administrative hurdles to restart flights swiftly.

Industry experts anticipate high demand once services resume, given the historically strong load factors on India-China routes. Reconnecting these air links is expected to deliver substantial benefits in trade, tourism, business travel, and cargo movement, particularly as both economies continue to recover from the global pandemic.

If successful, the restoration of direct flights will mark a significant step toward rebuilding economic and cultural ties between India and China, unlocking new opportunities for collaboration and growth.
