The Indian Air Force (IAF) has been ranked as the world’s sixth most powerful air force in the 2026 World Directory of Modern Military Aircraft (WDMMA) Global Air Powers Rankings, marking a major achievement for India’s military aviation.
The latest rankings place the IAF ahead of the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF), which secured the seventh position. Unlike rankings based solely on aircraft numbers, WDMMA uses its proprietary TruVal Rating (TvR) system to evaluate the overall strength and effectiveness of an air force.
The assessment considers factors such as technological capability, operational readiness, logistics, fleet diversity, as well as offensive and defensive capabilities. The methodology is designed to measure an air force’s real-world combat effectiveness and its ability to sustain modern military operations.
The recognition highlights the Indian Air Force’s growing capabilities and continued modernization efforts, reinforcing its position among the world’s leading air forces.
