Indian airlines are set to become global leaders in sustainability, with projections indicating that in the next five years, they will operate the youngest fleet in the world and reduce their carbon emissions to become the least emitters in global aviation, moving from their current position as the third-largest emitter, industry experts revealed on Wednesday.

Speaking at the India Travel & Tourism Sustainability Conclave 2025, Akasa Air Co-Founder Aditya Ghosh shared his optimism about the future of Indian aviation. “Five years from now, I definitely feel when you compare Indian aviation to the rest of the world, we will be flying the youngest fleet in the sky,” Ghosh said, emphasizing the shift towards more fuel-efficient, environmentally friendly aircraft.

India’s aviation industry is already taking significant steps towards reducing its environmental impact, with many carriers planning to invest in newer, more eco-friendly aircraft. Industry leaders highlighted that major Indian airlines, including low-cost carriers and full-service operators, are prioritizing fleet upgrades, focusing on fuel efficiency, and aiming to replace older aircraft with the latest models that produce fewer emissions.

The transition to a younger fleet is expected to significantly reduce the aviation sector’s carbon footprint, as newer aircraft are equipped with advanced technologies that consume less fuel and produce lower emissions. This move is part of India’s broader push to meet international climate targets and ensure that the aviation industry contributes positively to environmental sustainability.

Additionally, airlines are increasingly adopting sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and other green technologies to complement fleet modernization. The industry is also expected to collaborate with the government to improve infrastructure, create greener airports, and reduce emissions in the aviation ecosystem.

Aditya Ghosh further emphasized that the shift to a younger fleet would not only benefit the environment but also improve operational efficiency, reduce maintenance costs, and enhance the overall flying experience for passengers.

Indian aviation’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact comes at a time when global airlines are under increasing pressure to adopt sustainable practices. With Indian carriers making significant strides in this direction, the country’s aviation sector is poised to play a key role in the global move towards greener aviation, while simultaneously fostering growth in the burgeoning travel and tourism industry.

As the aviation industry globally grapples with climate change concerns, India’s efforts to build the youngest and least emitting fleet over the next five years will place its airlines at the forefront of aviation sustainability.
