India’s domestic air passenger traffic fell 6.34% year-on-year in August 2026, with scheduled airlines carrying 12.13 million passengers compared with 12.95 million in August 2025, according to DGCA data. Traffic during January–August stood at 110.53 million, down 0.18% year-on-year.
The DGCA data also showed changes in airline market shares, with IndiGo’s share declining while the Air India Group’s share increased. Meanwhile, SpiceJet is facing increased scrutiny amid flight delays, financial pressures, rising costs and operational challenges.
Separately, an IndiGo London–Delhi flight returned to Heathrow on September 22 after a technical issue was detected shortly after take-off. The aircraft landed safely after around an hour in the air and was sent for maintenance checks. IndiGo arranged accommodation and alternative flights for affected passengers.
