Japan Airlines has launched a new trial involving humanoid robots at Tokyo Haneda Airport to support ground handling operations and reduce the physical workload on airport staff. The initiative is being carried out in partnership with GMO AI & Robotics.
As part of the proof-of-concept program, the robots are being tested for tasks such as lifting heavy cargo containers inside aircraft holds and moving containers with greater accuracy and precision. The airline says the project is designed to improve efficiency while helping staff avoid physically demanding work.
JAL stated that its employees remain at the heart of every passenger journey, and the robotic support system is intended to assist—not replace—ground crews. By allowing robots to handle heavy lifting, airport teams can focus more on customer service and operational care.
The airline will evaluate different humanoid robot models during the trial before selecting the most effective systems for possible long-term airport integration. The move reflects the growing use of AI and robotics across the aviation industry to improve safety, productivity, and workforce support.
