A JetBlue flight departing Providence was forced to take its forward lavatory out of service after a passenger allegedly used the sink as a toilet, causing the drain to become blocked.
Unlike household plumbing, aircraft sinks and toilets operate on separate systems, meaning a clogged sink cannot be repaired during flight. As a result, the entire lavatory had to be closed until maintenance teams could inspect and clear the blockage after landing.
The incident was reportedly communicated through the aircraft’s ACARS messaging system. Aviation experts note that even a single unusable lavatory can impact airline operations, as aircraft must meet minimum lavatory requirements before departure, potentially affecting future flights if repairs are delayed.
