Three Colombian suspects arrested over the murder of Eric Fernando Gutierrez Molina could face justice in both Colombia and the United States, according to Colombian authorities.
The suspects, believed to be linked to the criminal group “Los Goteros,” are accused of targeting foreign tourists through dating apps before drugging and robbing them. Investigators allege Gutierrez met the suspects during a layover in Medellín, where he was reportedly drugged, robbed of around US$7,500 and other valuables, before being killed. His body was later found abandoned in a rural area more than 100 kilometers away.
Authorities arrested two suspects in Peru with support from INTERPOL, HSI, the U.S. Embassy, and Colombian law enforcement, while a third suspect was detained in Colombia.
Officials say that because Gutierrez was a U.S. citizen and worked for American Airlines, the suspects could also be extradited to the United States after Colombian legal proceedings. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities examine possible links between the gang and other crimes involving foreign nationals.
