A KLM Boeing 777 operating flight KL735 from Amsterdam to Curaçao was forced to return to Schiphol after a power bank caught fire in the Business Class cabin. The incident occurred around five and a half hours into the flight while the aircraft was over the Atlantic. Cabin crew quickly brought the fire under control before the pilots decided to turn back as a precaution.
The incident drew additional attention after Dutch media reported that the power bank belonged to former KLM CEO Camiel Eurlings. Multiple passengers reportedly identified him as the owner, while KLM has not officially confirmed the passenger’s identity, citing privacy. Reports said Eurlings suffered minor injuries.
KLM’s rules allow passengers to carry up to two power banks in hand baggage, but they must not be used or charged during the flight. Reports alleged the device was being charged when it caught fire, although KLM said the exact circumstances remain under investigation. The aircraft landed safely in Amsterdam, and passengers were later accommodated on another aircraft.
