A crucial meeting is set to take place in the second week of March to discuss the potential reopening of the HAL (Hindustan Aeronautics Limited) Airport in Bengaluru. The airport, located just 13 km from Vidhana Soudha, served the city until it was closed in 2008 to make way for the expansion of Kempegowda International Airport.
Tejasvi Surya, the Member of Parliament for Bengaluru South, confirmed the meeting, stating that it will be chaired by the Civil Aviation Minister and will include key stakeholders, such as the Airports Authority of India (AAI), the Karnataka state government, and other aviation authorities. The meeting aims to deliberate on the feasibility of reopening the airport, which has been a long-standing demand from local residents and businesses.
The reopening of HAL Airport could provide significant relief to the growing air traffic in Bengaluru, alleviating congestion at the city’s current international airport. The discussions will focus on the infrastructure requirements, potential usage of the facility, and how it could complement the existing airport.
The move to revisit the reopening of HAL Airport has been gaining momentum, with several stakeholders recognizing the strategic advantage of utilizing the location, which is closer to the city center and can ease accessibility for travelers. As the plans unfold, the meeting in March will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Bengaluru’s aviation landscape.
