Today marks one year since the tragic loss of Air India Flight 171, one of the deadliest aviation disasters in recent history. On June 12, 2025, the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner departed Ahmedabad for London Gatwick with 242 people on board. Just 32 seconds after takeoff, the aircraft crashed into student hostels near B.J. Medical College, claiming 260 lives, including 19 people on the ground.

The accident became the first-ever total loss of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner and sent shockwaves across the global aviation industry. Only one passenger, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, survived the crash.

Investigators later revealed that both engine fuel-control switches moved to the cutoff position shortly after takeoff, causing a loss of power. However, the reason behind the switch movement remains unclear, and the final investigation report is still awaited.

As families across India, the United Kingdom, Portugal and Canada continue to mourn their loved ones, the aviation community pauses today to remember the 260 lives lost and honor their memory.
