Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol announced that the long-awaited runway extension work at Lohegaon Airport would soon begin. This significant step aims to enhance the airport’s capacity and operational efficiency, marking a milestone in the region’s aviation infrastructure. The project has gained momentum following a detailed obstacle limitation survey conducted earlier this year, which received a positive nod from the ministry.
The extension plan includes adding 500 meters to the eastern side and 300 meters to the western side of the runway. Once completed, this expansion will enable Lohegaon Airport to handle wide-bodied aircraft, a move expected to significantly boost both passenger and cargo operations. The extended runway is crucial for meeting the increasing demand for air travel and positioning Pune as a major hub in the region.
The project, estimated at Rs 160 crore, is a collaborative effort involving multiple stakeholders. The state government will bear 60% of the cost, with contributions from the Pune Municipal Corporation, Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, and the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority, sharing the remaining expenses proportionally. This partnership underscores the importance of the initiative, not only for the city but for the broader regional economy.
With land acquisition of 225-250 acres underway, the project represents a blend of strategic vision and resource alignment. It is expected to drive growth by enhancing connectivity, attracting investments, and supporting the overall development of Pune’s aviation ecosystem. As the groundwork begins, the runway extension signals a transformative chapter for Lohegaon Airport, catering to the aspirations of a rapidly growing city.
