A Sepehran Airlines Boeing 737 operating from Mashhad to Kermanshah was forced to return to Mashhad shortly after takeoff on September 15 after a landing-gear tyre problem and a reported engine emergency. The aircraft experienced severe vibrations during the return flight.
Videos from inside the aircraft showed cabin ceiling panels and overhead compartments coming loose as the aircraft shook violently, causing panic among passengers. The aircraft landed safely in Mashhad, and no injuries were reported.
Iranian airport authorities later clarified that the outer tread of one tyre separated during takeoff, rather than the entire tyre bursting. The connection between the tyre issue, reported engine emergency and severe vibrations remains under investigation.
The incident has also drawn attention to Iran’s longstanding difficulties in accessing aircraft spare parts and maintenance services amid U.S. sanctions.
