The Rise And Fall Of Philippines’ Ultra-Low-Cost Zest Air.

Before the dominance of today’s budget airlines in the Philippines, one carrier earned a reputation for offering some of the country’s cheapest airfares. Zest Air, once known for ultra-low-cost tickets and budget-friendly travel, became a popular choice for Filipino travelers seeking affordable flights to domestic destinations.

The airline’s roots trace back to Asian Spirit, a regional carrier that focused on underserved routes and tourist destinations. In 2008, businessman Alfredo Yao acquired the airline and rebranded it as Zest Airways, later widely known as Zest Air. Under the new ownership, the carrier expanded its operations using Airbus A320 jets and Xian MA-60 turboprop aircraft while offering fares that were often lower than competitors in the Philippine market.

Zest Air quickly became famous for its ultra-low-cost model, with some round-trip fares available for as little as ₱2,000, including taxes and fees. Unlike many low-cost airlines at the time, passengers also received complimentary refreshments onboard, often featuring products from Yao’s popular Zest-O beverage brand. The airline operated domestic and regional international services, connecting major cities and tourist destinations across the country.

A major turning point came in 2013 when AirAsia Philippines entered a strategic partnership with Zest Airways through a share-swap agreement. The alliance gave AirAsia Philippines access to valuable Manila airport slots, while Zest Air benefited from the strength of the AirAsia network and brand. Following the deal, the airline was rebranded as AirAsia Zest as part of its integration into the AirAsia group.

By the end of 2015, the Zest Air brand officially disappeared as operations were consolidated under the Philippines AirAsia name. Although the airline no longer exists, its legacy lives on through AirAsia’s continued focus on affordable travel. Many aviation enthusiasts still remember Zest Air as one of the pioneers of ultra-low-cost flying in the Philippines.
