In a significant step towards improving air connectivity in Ladakh, Thoise Airport is set to commence civilian flight operations following approval from the Indian Air Force (IAF). This long-awaited development will provide direct air access to the remote Nubra Valley, facilitating both tourism and local travel.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has allocated 40 kanals of land for the expansion project, which is estimated to cost around ₹400 crore. The investment aims to overcome travel challenges faced by residents and tourists alike, making the region more accessible while boosting economic opportunities.
For years, local leaders have advocated for the integration of Thoise Airport into the civil aviation network. Despite previous setbacks under the UDAN scheme, fresh momentum has revived the project. Airlines such as IndiGo and Air India are now being encouraged to evaluate the feasibility of operating flights to and from the airport.
Once operational, Thoise Airport is expected to significantly reduce travel time to Nubra Valley, which currently relies on the high-altitude Khardung La Pass for road access. The move aligns with the government’s broader goal of improving regional connectivity and promoting sustainable tourism in Ladakh.
