A Qatar Airways-operated flight from Melbourne to Doha turned into a frightening mid-air ordeal on September 11 after two male passengers allegedly became violent, threatened passengers and crew, and claimed to have a gun. The flight was operated by Virgin Australia as VA7, marketed by Qatar Airways as QR8402, using a Boeing 777-300ER.
Witnesses said the men allegedly headbutted and spat at cabin crew members and made threats involving a firearm. Passengers and crew members intervened, with reports saying up to seven people were needed to restrain each man. Cable ties were reportedly used to keep them restrained for much of the remaining flight.
The aircraft eventually landed in Doha, where local authorities boarded and took both passengers into custody. Passengers reportedly applauded as authorities entered the aircraft. Qatar Airways confirmed that two male passengers were involved in a physical altercation and were restrained before being handed over to authorities.
The incident occurred on the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, adding to the seriousness of the situation. Witnesses praised the cabin crew for managing the prolonged emergency and described the ordeal as “terrifying.”
