Visakhapatnam’s old airport has shut down after nearly seven decades of operations, leaving around 200 outsourced workers facing an uncertain future. The closure followed the shift of airport operations to the newly opened Bhogapuram Airport.
Porters, sanitation workers and other outsourced staff, many of whom had worked at the old airport for 20–30 years, staged a protest following the shutdown. The workers alleged that contractors abandoned them after operations moved to the new facility, leaving them without clarity over their jobs and livelihoods.
The affected workers have appealed to the government to intervene and provide employment opportunities or other support. While Bhogapuram Airport has created jobs for a new workforce, those who spent decades serving at Visakhapatnam’s old airport are now waiting for a solution to their uncertain future.
