India’s passport has made notable progress in global rankings, climbing to 80th position in the 2026 Henley Passport Index, up from 85th last year. This improvement allows Indian citizens to enjoy visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 55 countries, reflecting the impact of India’s diplomatic efforts and international agreements. Experts say that gradual improvements in mobility highlight India’s growing presence in global travel corridors.

🌏 Global Ranking Update
The Henley Passport Index ranks countries based on the number of destinations a passport holder can access without a prior visa. India’s rise to 80th position indicates a steady increase in travel freedom over the past year. Citizens can now explore more countries with fewer visa requirements, enhancing tourism, business, and international connectivity.

🥇 Top Performing Countries
Globally, Singapore retains the top position with access to 192 destinations, followed by Japan and South Korea at 188 countries each. These nations lead in travel freedom due to strong diplomatic relations and visa agreements worldwide.

🇮🇳 India’s Diplomatic Gains
India’s improvement in the index is linked to several bilateral and multilateral agreements, including Germany’s transit waiver, which allows Indian travelers smoother access to certain European routes. Despite these gains, India still trails regional leaders such as the UAE, ranked 5th globally, emphasizing the difference in travel freedom across Asia.
