India is moving closer to a major defence acquisition as the Indian Air Force prepares to procure around 400 Astra Mk-1 beyond visual range (BVR) air-to-air missiles. The deal is expected to significantly boost the country’s indigenous air combat capabilities and strengthen long-range aerial engagement power.

Developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation and manufactured by Bharat Dynamics Limited, the Astra Mk-1 plays a key role in India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The missile reduces dependence on foreign systems like Russia’s R-77 and France’s MICA, while offering a strike range of up to 110 km and speeds reaching Mach 4.5.

Currently deployed on the Sukhoi Su-30MKI fleet, the missile is being further integrated with platforms such as the MiG-29K and the indigenous HAL Tejas Mk-1 and Mk-1A variants. Its advanced guidance system and high-explosive warhead provide a strong edge in modern aerial combat scenarios.

The upcoming order builds on earlier inductions by the Indian Air Force and Navy, which have already acquired over 200 Astra missiles. With continued expansion and integration, the Astra programme is set to become a backbone of India’s future air defence strategy.
