Lufthansa is introducing advanced technology into aircraft maintenance by using artificial intelligence and drones to improve safety inspections. The airline recently demonstrated the new system at its Frankfurt hangar, showing how modern tools are transforming aircraft checks.
Traditionally, when an aircraft is struck by lightning, a team of mechanics may spend several hours manually inspecting the exterior for possible damage. With the new drone-based system, a single technician can operate a drone around the aircraft and complete the inspection process much faster.
The drone captures detailed images of the aircraft surface, while AI-powered software analyzes the data and automatically identifies areas that may require further attention. Human maintenance experts then review the results, confirm the findings, and carry out repairs if necessary.
Lufthansa says the technology will help make maintenance procedures faster, more efficient, and safer by supporting engineers with more accurate inspection data. The move highlights the growing role of artificial intelligence and automation in the future of aviation safety.
