A heartwarming story involving a blind traveller, his guide dog and a fellow passenger has gone viral after a flight from Los Angeles to Raleigh-Durham. Ed Summers, a software engineer who works on making technology more accessible for people with disabilities, was travelling home with his guide dog, Loki, after attending the CSUN Assistive Technology Conference.

Loki, a guide dog from The Seeing Eye, was resting quietly beneath the seat in front of Summers when nearby passengers reportedly objected to having another service animal close to them. They also wanted the under-seat space Loki was occupying, prompting a flight attendant to assist with the seating issue.

Watching the situation unfold, fellow passenger Jen Hamilton approached Summers and asked, “Hi, my name is Jen. Can I sit with you?” Summers agreed, and Hamilton moved into the seat beside him. The two spent the remainder of the flight talking, with Hamilton later describing the journey as the best flight of her life.

The story gained widespread attention online, but Summers explained that what mattered most was how Hamilton handled the situation. Rather than making decisions for him, she offered a possible solution and asked him directly what he wanted.

Summers said this approach allowed him to make his own choice instead of having others decide what was best for him. His experience highlighted the importance of respecting the independence and agency of people with disabilities.

In a further personal touch, Summers had only recently created a TikTok account, and Hamilton was the first person he followed. Their encounter has since become a reminder that a simple act of kindness, combined with respect and inclusion, can make a lasting difference.
