Boeing’s long-awaited Boeing 777X program is facing further delays as the company continues working through final certification milestones.

Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg recently spoke about the challenges ahead, confirming that ETOPS (Extended-range Twin-engine Operational Performance Standards) testing remains one of the major steps still required for the 777-9 variant.

The certification process will continue alongside final FAA Type Inspection Authorization (TIA-5) testing and function and reliability flights. While much of the flight test program could be completed by the end of 2026, ETOPS requirements are now expected to continue into 2027.

As a result, first customer deliveries of the 777X are now expected in 2027, pushing back earlier timelines for the next-generation aircraft.

The 777X is designed to become Boeing’s future flagship widebody aircraft, featuring advanced technology, larger composite wings, improved fuel efficiency, and updated passenger comfort features.

The delay highlights the complexity of certifying a new-generation commercial aircraft as Boeing continues working closely with regulators to complete the program
