Air New Zealand and Air India have announced a new codeshare partnership and a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing air connectivity between India and New Zealand. The MoU was signed in Mumbai, with the presence of New Zealand’s Honourable Prime Minister Mr. Christopher Luxon and other dignitaries, marking a significant milestone in the bilateral aviation relationship.

Under the MoU, the airlines will establish a codeshare partnership on 16 routes spanning India, Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand. This collaboration will provide more travel options for passengers, enabling them to fly from Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai with Air India and connect at key hubs in Sydney, Melbourne, or Singapore onto Air New Zealand-operated flights to Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington, and Queenstown.

The codeshare agreement is designed to improve the ease of booking and travel for customers, while also increasing the visibility of both countries as prime tourism destinations. By expanding options and streamlining connections, the partnership will contribute to greater demand for travel between the two nations.

In addition to the codeshare agreement, the MoU lays the groundwork for Air New Zealand and Air India to explore the possibility of introducing a direct service between India and New Zealand by the end of 2028, contingent upon the delivery of new aircraft and approval from relevant government authorities.

Air New Zealand’s Chief Executive Greg Foran emphasized the importance of India as a growing market for the airline, noting the significant increase in travel demand and tourism potential. “India represents a key growth market for Air New Zealand, and we’re excited to enhance connectivity. This codeshare agreement is an important first step as we explore the feasibility of a direct service between the two countries,” said Foran.

Campbell Wilson, Managing Director & CEO of Air India, highlighted the expansion of the airline’s global network, noting that this partnership would simplify customer journeys and strengthen the airline’s presence. He further emphasized the long-term goal of operating a direct service between India and New Zealand, a commitment shared by both airlines.

As India continues to grow as a key tourism and business hub, this collaboration also aligns with Tourism New Zealand’s efforts to boost inbound tourism from the Indian market. With over 18 million potential travelers from New Delhi, Bangalore, and Mumbai actively considering a trip to New Zealand, the partnership aims to unlock significant growth in tourism.

Tourism New Zealand Chief Executive Rene de Monchy remarked, “Improved aviation links play a crucial role in growing international tourism, and this partnership will make it easier for Indian travelers to visit New Zealand, exploring its landscapes, culture, and renowned film locations.”

With this strengthened connectivity, Air New Zealand and Air India are paving the way for greater collaboration in tourism, trade, and economic growth, ensuring a bright future for travel between India and New Zealand.
