Lufthansa is preparing to retire its remaining Airbus A340-600 aircraft, with the type’s final retirement scheduled for October 19. The move marks the end of an era for one of the aviation industry’s most distinctive long-haul passenger aircraft.

First introduced in 2001, the A340-600 measured around 75 metres (247 feet) long, making it the world’s longest airliner at the time. It held that distinction until the Boeing 747-8 entered the scene in 2010.

The aircraft became popular among aviation enthusiasts for its impressive length, large wings and four Rolls-Royce Trent 500 engines. Its unique appearance and long-haul capabilities helped it develop a loyal following among plane spotters and travellers.

With Lufthansa retiring its remaining aircraft, opportunities to experience the A340-600 in passenger service are becoming increasingly limited. The retirement marks the closing chapter for an aircraft that has remained a memorable part of modern commercial aviation.
