Mohandas Pai, the renowned economist and former CFO of Infosys, recently voiced his strong displeasure with IndiGo Airlines after experiencing what he described as poor treatment of passengers during a flight from Bengaluru to Coimbatore. Pai took to his official X handle (formerly Twitter) to express his frustration, highlighting that he was made to sit on the aircraft without air conditioning, despite the sweltering heat on the tarmac in Bengaluru.

In his post, Mr. Pai shared the discomfort he and fellow passengers endured, stating that the air conditioning was only turned on after a protest from the passengers. He called the airline’s treatment of its customers “unacceptable,” emphasizing that such practices reflect badly on the airline’s management and customer service standards. “IndiGo treats its passengers badly. Sitting in 6E 7407 without AC on hot tarmac in Bengaluru. No way to treat passengers,” Mr. Pai wrote, adding further frustration over the poor handling of the situation.

The incident quickly gained attention online, with many users expressing solidarity with Mr. Pai and criticizing IndiGo for its lack of regard for passenger comfort. In response, IndiGo issued a statement acknowledging the issue and apologizing for the inconvenience caused. The airline explained that the delay in turning on the air conditioning was due to operational challenges, and they assured passengers that such an incident would be addressed promptly to prevent recurrence.

IndiGo also reiterated its commitment to improving the overall travel experience for its passengers, stating that feedback from customers, including incidents like the one raised by Mr. Pai, is crucial for improving its services. However, the incident has raised concerns about the importance of customer care and operational efficiency, particularly during the hot and humid conditions in India’s summer months.

For passengers, this episode highlights the ongoing challenges faced by airlines in balancing cost-cutting measures with the basic expectations of comfort and service. As the debate continues, it serves as a reminder of the need for airlines to prioritize passenger experience and handle issues with greater transparency and accountability.
