Pune Airport has introduced a pilot initiative aimed at reducing luggage damage at baggage carousels, following frequent passenger complaints. The airport has installed foam buffers along the edges of the baggage carousels to cushion the impact and prevent suitcases from colliding with hard surfaces during circulation.
In addition to physical modifications, airport staff have begun arranging luggage more neatly on conveyor belts to minimize the risk of bags bumping into each other. This approach, inspired by efficient baggage handling systems in countries like Japan and across Southeast Asia, is being tested in coordination with select airlines.
According to airport authorities, the system is currently under evaluation, with the potential for enhancements based on its effectiveness. Early feedback from passengers has been positive, with many noticing improved care in how their baggage is handled.
However, challenges remain, especially during peak travel hours when multiple flights share the same carousel, sometimes leading to delays. Despite these hurdles, Pune Airport’s efforts underscore its focus on improving the overall passenger experience and ensuring that luggage arrives safely and undamaged.
