Russia has proposed a major upgrade package for India’s Su-30MKI fighter jets, offering advanced Irbis-E radar systems and AL-41F-1S engines to enhance the aircraft’s combat capabilities. The move is aimed at strengthening the Indian Air Force’s frontline fleet with improved performance and survivability.

The Irbis-E radar, currently used on the Sukhoi Su-35, would significantly boost detection range and tracking capabilities, allowing the Su-30MKI to engage multiple targets more effectively. Meanwhile, the AL-41F-1S engines promise higher thrust, better fuel efficiency, and improved maneuverability compared to existing powerplants.

India’s Indian Air Force operates one of the largest fleets of Sukhoi Su-30MKI jets, which form the backbone of its air combat strength. The proposed modernization could extend the aircraft’s service life and align it with next-generation warfare requirements.

If approved, the upgrade program would mark a significant step in India-Russia defence cooperation, enhancing the operational effectiveness of the Su-30MKI fleet amid evolving regional security challenges.
