Southwest Flight Faces Messy Mid-Air Dog Incident.

Passengers aboard Southwest Flight WN4981 from St. Louis to Fort Lauderdale reportedly faced an unusual disruption on September 15 when a Belgian Malinois traveling near the front of the cabin became increasingly restless during the final part of the flight. The incident was described by a passenger in a Reddit post.

According to the passenger, the dog remained calm for most of the roughly 2½-hour flight before suddenly scratching at the cabin carpet and becoming increasingly agitated. About 25–30 minutes before landing, the dog reportedly had a large accident near the flight attendants’ jumpseat, creating an unpleasant situation in the forward cabin.

One flight attendant reportedly struggled with the smell while another quickly gathered gloves, wipes, paper towels and trash bags to clean the area before landing. The dog’s owner reportedly remained with it and apologized, saying the incident had never happened before.

Southwest’s current policy allows fully trained service dogs to travel in the cabin when they meet the airline’s requirements. The airline states that a service dog may be refused transportation if it poses a safety risk, significantly disrupts the cabin or exhibits behavior such as urinating or defecating in the cabin.

The dog’s specific service-animal status in this incident has not been independently confirmed. The flight landed normally in Fort Lauderdale, with reports indicating the crew managed the situation before arrival.
