Budget airline SpiceJet is facing fresh insolvency proceedings as Indonesia’s PT BBN Airlines has filed a plea over unpaid lease rentals amounting to $5.94 million. The case was heard by the Delhi bench of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) on Friday, where SpiceJet requested additional time to respond. The tribunal has not yet issued a formal notice, and the next hearing is scheduled for April 21.

This latest insolvency plea adds to SpiceJet’s mounting legal challenges as the airline continues to grapple with financial strain. In recent months, the carrier has faced multiple legal disputes related to outstanding dues and operational difficulties. The new case underscores the growing pressure on the airline to resolve its financial obligations and maintain business continuity.

PT BBN Airlines, which specializes in aircraft leasing and charter services, claims that SpiceJet has defaulted on lease payments, prompting the legal action. If the tribunal admits the plea, it could escalate the airline’s financial troubles and potentially impact its ongoing operations.

Despite these challenges, SpiceJet has maintained that it is actively working to address its financial commitments and ensure compliance with legal requirements. The airline previously stated its commitment to resolving disputes with lessors and other stakeholders through negotiation.

As the April 21 hearing approaches, industry observers will closely watch the outcome, which could have significant implications for SpiceJet’s future operations and the broader Indian aviation sector.
