Washington Dulles International Airport is set to undergo the largest redevelopment project in its history, with a $22 billion modernization plan announced by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority and United Airlines.
The multi-year project includes replacing the aging C/D concourses, constructing additional gates to accommodate larger aircraft, and expanding capacity as passenger numbers continue to grow. The redevelopment is designed to improve operational efficiency while supporting future domestic and international expansion.
For United Airlines passengers, the project will introduce one of the world’s largest United Polaris Lounges, expanded United Club facilities, larger waiting areas, faster baggage handling systems, upgraded check-in halls, improved security screening, and a modernized international arrivals area with a new U.S. Customs facility.
A major highlight of the transformation is the expansion of the airport’s AeroTrain network, which will eventually replace the iconic diesel-powered mobile lounges that have transported passengers between terminals and aircraft since 1962.
The first major milestone will arrive later this year with the opening of the new Concourse E, a 435,000-square-foot terminal featuring 14 new United Airlines gates, direct AeroTrain access, and one of the airline’s largest airport lounges. The facility is already under construction and fully funded.
Washington Dulles handled a record 29 million passengers in 2025, making the expansion one of the airport’s most significant infrastructure investments to meet rising travel demand.
