Boeing has received certification from the Federal Aviation Administration to increase the maximum take-off weight (MTOW) for its 787-9 and 787-10 Dreamliner variants, marking a significant enhancement in aircraft performance and operational capability.

With this approval, airlines operating these aircraft will be able to extend their range by up to 400 nautical miles (around 740 km) or carry substantially higher payloads on existing routes. This added flexibility is expected to improve route economics and enable carriers to optimize long-haul operations more efficiently.

Boeing also confirmed that it is close to delivering the first Dreamliners equipped with the increased MTOW. Notably, all 787-9 and 787-10 aircraft manufactured after December are already structurally capable of handling the higher weight limits, simplifying the transition for operators.

Under the upgrade, the 787-9 will see its optional MTOW increase by 4,540 kg (10,000 lb), allowing an additional 300 nautical miles of range or up to 3 tonnes of extra payload. Meanwhile, the larger 787-10 variant will benefit from a 6,350 kg increase in MTOW, translating into up to 400 nautical miles of additional range or approximately 5 tonnes of increased payload capacity.

This development reinforces Boeing’s efforts to enhance the efficiency and versatility of its wide-body aircraft, offering airlines greater operational flexibility amid evolving global travel demand.
