India’s first locally manufactured Airbus C295 military transport aircraft has successfully completed its maiden test flight from the Final Assembly Line in Vadodara, Gujarat, marking a historic milestone for the country’s defence and aerospace manufacturing sector.
The successful flight represents a major step forward in the programme to build 40 C295 aircraft in India under a landmark contract for the Indian Air Force (IAF). The achievement brings the first India-assembled aircraft closer to delivery, with the handover expected later this year.
The C295 programme is considered a significant boost to the Government of India’s “Make in India” initiative. It marks the first time a military transport aircraft is being manufactured in India by the private sector, strengthening the nation’s indigenous aerospace capabilities and reducing dependence on foreign production.
The project is a joint venture between Airbus and Tata Advanced Systems Limited, with support from numerous Indian MSMEs supplying critical components. The programme is expected to create a robust aerospace ecosystem while generating skilled employment and advancing India’s defence manufacturing ambitions.
