A JetBlue Airways pilot reported a possible drone collision while approaching John F. Kennedy International Airport, prompting an investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The incident occurred around 7:15 a.m. on JetBlue Flight 948. During the approach, the flight crew informed air traffic control that they may have struck an object believed to be a drone while turning at approximately 3,000 feet altitude. The pilot reported that the object appeared to hit the aircraft near the cockpit area.
The crew confirmed that no assistance was needed and continued the flight for a normal landing. A post-flight inspection found no damage to the aircraft and no confirmed evidence of a collision.
The FAA has launched a review into the incident. The report comes shortly after another pilot near Newark Liberty International Airport reported a close encounter with a drone during landing.
Drone activity near airports remains a growing safety concern, with the FAA receiving more than 100 drone sighting reports near U.S. airports every month. Unauthorized drone operations near aircraft and controlled airspace are illegal and can result in serious penalties.
