The remains of U.S. Army Air Forces pilot Walter Bateman have finally returned to his home state of Maryland, 83 years after his B-24D Liberator bomber disappeared during a combat mission over Italy in World War II.

Bateman was just 22 years old when he took off from Libya on August 16, 1943, as part of a formation of 26 B-24 bombers targeting enemy airfields near Foggia, Italy. Seven aircraft failed to return, including Bateman’s bomber, Suzy Q. All 10 crew members aboard were reported missing.

Although his remains were recovered in Italy in 1945, they could not be identified at the time. Several sets of unidentified American remains had been found in a cemetery in Lacedonia, but they were mixed together and buried as unknowns at a U.S. military cemetery in Naples.

In 2022, the remains were exhumed and sent to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency laboratory for further examination. Using modern forensic techniques, specialists finally identified Bateman, with his identity officially confirmed in 2026.

When his flag-draped casket arrived in Maryland, his closest living relatives were unable to attend. Active-duty military personnel, veterans, police officers and firefighters gathered to honour him, standing in as his family and welcoming the fallen airman home after more than eight decades.
