Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is bringing its cultural heritage into a new era with redesigned cabin crew uniforms by renowned Pakistani fashion designer Hassan Sheheryar Yasin, popularly known as HSY. The collection draws inspiration from the airline’s historic decision in 1956 to move away from Western-style uniforms and showcase traditional Pakistani clothing.

The original uniform, designed by Pakistani dress designer Laila Shahzada and American designer Chausie Fountaine, featured a green tunic, white shalwar trousers, a draped dupatta and a matching green cap. The design helped establish PIA’s distinctive international identity by presenting Pakistani culture to passengers around the world.

PIA’s reputation grew during its golden years, particularly under Air Commodore Nur Khan’s leadership. In 1960, it became the first Asian airline to operate the Boeing 707. The airline also collaborated with celebrated designers, including French fashion icon Pierre Cardin, as it built an image associated with style and hospitality.

The latest HSY collection features deep green colours, structured tailoring, coordinated headwear and patterned scarves. Designed with modern cabin crew duties in mind, the uniforms also incorporate breathable fabrics and greater freedom of movement, with coordinated designs for male crew members.

The new collection is scheduled to debut on October 31 aboard PIA’s inaugural Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner flight from London to Islamabad. The unveiling comes as the airline seeks to modernise its operations and rebuild its reputation under private ownership.

While the uniforms reconnect PIA with its celebrated past, restoring its international standing will also depend on reliable operations, consistent service and a passenger experience that reflects its historic reputation.
