Air India has taken a significant step toward modernizing its passenger experience by signing an agreement with Panasonic Avionics Corporation to install its next-generation Astrova in-flight entertainment (IFE) system on 34 new widebody aircraft. This includes the latest Airbus A350-900s, A350-1000s, and Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners that are expected to be inducted into the airline’s fleet as part of its ambitious transformation and fleet renewal strategy under the Tata Group’s ownership.
The integration of Panasonic’s Astrova system marks a major enhancement in how passengers will engage with entertainment and media content during their flights. Designed to provide a premium onboard experience, Astrova features ultra-high-definition 4K OLED screens, high-fidelity audio with Bluetooth connectivity, customizable passenger interfaces, and improved power supply options, enabling travelers to enjoy a more immersive and tailored journey. The system is also built with sustainability in mind, offering a lighter and more energy-efficient design, which contributes to the airline’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint.
These new widebody aircraft equipped with Astrova will operate on both long-haul international routes and select domestic services, particularly from major Indian aviation hubs such as Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi (DEL) and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai (BOM). This deployment will not only elevate the overall cabin experience but also align Air India’s onboard offerings with those of other top global carriers.
The move is part of a broader effort by Air India to redefine its brand image and service standards in a highly competitive global aviation market. Since being acquired by the Tata Group, the airline has embarked on an aggressive modernization journey, which includes a landmark aircraft order for over 470 planes, cabin refurbishments, digital transformation initiatives, and a renewed focus on customer-centric service delivery.
By adopting advanced technologies like Panasonic’s Astrova IFE system, Air India signals its commitment to becoming a world-class airline, offering a superior flying experience that combines comfort, innovation, and personalized entertainment for every traveler.
