India has marked a major milestone in sustainable aviation with the launch of its first Ethanol-to-Jet (ETJ) fuel plant in Atchuthapuram. The facility aims to produce around 1,800 tonnes per annum of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) using ethanol derived from carbon dioxide.

The project is being developed by NTPC Limited, with EPC responsibilities awarded to GPS Renewables. The plant is located within the Green Hydrogen Hub of NTPC Green Energy Limited at Pudimadaka in the APIIC industrial zone of Anakapalle district.

Technology support will be provided by Lummus Technology, which will supply the ETJ process licence and basic engineering, while Xytel India will handle detailed engineering for the core systems. The project will include hydrogen generation units along with full utility and infrastructure development.

Scheduled for completion by March 2029, the plant represents a significant step toward building domestic SAF production capacity and reducing aviation emissions. It also aligns with India’s broader push toward cleaner energy and sustainable industrial growth.
