IndiGo, India’s largest airline, is achieving in 18 years what took Southwest Airlines three decades, according to CEO Pieter Elbers. The Netherlands-born aviation leader, who previously served as the CEO of KLM, took charge of IndiGo at a time when the airline had overcome the turbulence of the Covid-19 crisis, Jet Airways had exited the market, and airfares were on the rise. With these factors in play, IndiGo found itself in a strong position for expansion and growth.

Speaking exclusively to ET Prime ahead of the 81st IATA Annual General Meeting (AGM), which IndiGo is set to host in June, Elbers shared insights into the airline’s growth trajectory and strategic vision. He highlighted how IndiGo has rapidly expanded its fleet, network, and market share, positioning itself as a dominant force in Indian aviation. The airline’s disciplined cost structure, strong domestic presence, and increasing international footprint have been key drivers of its success.

Under Elbers’ leadership, IndiGo has been aggressively pursuing international expansion, adding new destinations across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. The airline has also placed record aircraft orders, ensuring sustained growth and capacity expansion in the years ahead. As it continues to strengthen its global partnerships and explore new opportunities, IndiGo aims to solidify its reputation as one of the fastest-growing low-cost carriers in the world.

The upcoming IATA AGM in June, hosted by IndiGo, will be a significant event, bringing together global aviation leaders to discuss industry trends and challenges. As IndiGo continues to chart its ambitious growth path, Elbers remains confident in the airline’s ability to redefine the aviation landscape, both in India and beyond.
