Toronto – June 30, 2025:
Despite high operating costs and evolving post-pandemic travel patterns, transborder routes between the United States and Canada have shown remarkable resilience. In the first quarter of 2025, one particular route stood out for its stellar performance — Air Canada’s Toronto (YYZ) to Tampa (TPA) service, which achieved an average load factor of 96%, the highest among all US-Canada scheduled flights.

A Sunshine State Success Story

The Toronto-Tampa route has long been a favorite for both leisure travelers and snowbirds escaping the Canadian winter. Operated by Air Canada, the daily flight typically uses narrowbody aircraft like the Airbus A321 or Boeing 737 MAX 8. According to data compiled by aviation analytics firm Cirium, the route not only maintained high frequency during the January–March period but consistently sold out across most cabins — economy and premium included.

Several factors contributed to this strong showing:

  • Seasonal Demand: Florida remains one of the top U.S. destinations for Canadians during Q1, when temperatures in most of Canada drop below freezing.
  • Loyalty and Network Synergy: As a member of Star Alliance, Air Canada benefits from seamless connectivity with United Airlines in Tampa, expanding options for onward domestic travel in the U.S.
  • Competitive Pricing: While not the cheapest option, Air Canada’s fares on this route were seen as competitive relative to the value offered in terms of timing, baggage allowance, and reliability.

US-Canada Travel Rebounds

Overall, US-Canada air travel saw a robust recovery in Q1 2025, with load factors averaging around 81% across all transborder routes, according to Transport Canada. Business travel has yet to return to pre-pandemic levels, but leisure travel continues to surge, especially to warm-weather destinations.

Other High Performers

While Toronto-Tampa took the top spot, other routes also posted strong numbers:

  • Vancouver to Los Angeles (YVR-LAX) — WestJet and Air Canada saw average load factors above 90%, driven by both business and film industry traffic.
  • Montreal to Fort Lauderdale (YUL-FLL) — Another winter sun destination that saw steady traffic, especially during the March break period.

Looking Ahead

With summer travel now underway and fuel prices stabilizing, airlines are optimistic about maintaining strong transborder performance through Q2 and Q3. Air Canada has hinted at possibly increasing frequencies on popular routes like Toronto–Tampa and Montreal–Orlando to meet continued demand.

Meanwhile, U.S. carriers like American Airlines and Delta are ramping up their Canada services too — signaling that the battle for transborder dominance is far from over.
