Italy’s Sardinia island has officially welcomed its first-ever nonstop flight connection with the United States after a Delta Air Lines Boeing 767 arrived from New York’s JFK Airport at Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport. The inaugural service carried nearly 200 passengers and marked a major milestone for tourism and international connectivity in the region.
Airport teams celebrated the historic arrival with a traditional water cannon salute as the aircraft touched down in northern Sardinia. The new seasonal service will operate four times per week until October, becoming the only direct air link between Sardinia and North America during the summer travel season.
Local tourism authorities had reportedly spent several years working to secure the long-awaited route, aiming to attract more visitors from the United States and strengthen Sardinia’s position as a premium Mediterranean destination. Officials believe the new connection will significantly improve accessibility for international travellers.
The nonstop service also removes the need for American passengers to transit through mainland European airports before reaching Sardinia. At the same time, residents of the Italian island now have a direct connection to New York, opening up easier travel opportunities for both business and leisure journeys.
