A viral social media post by members of the Manila Symphony Orchestra has sparked a debate over airline baggage rules and cabin safety after musicians said they were asked to carry their violins by hand during a recent flight with Cebu Pacific.

Violinist Rona De Leon shared photos showing orchestra members seated onboard while holding their instruments after being told that their protective violin cases could not be brought into the cabin. According to the musicians, they were asked to check their cases while keeping the violins and bows with them because of concerns over possible damage to the delicate instruments.

The post quickly gained attention online, receiving thousands of reactions from musicians, travelers, and aviation enthusiasts. Many questioned whether passengers should be allowed to hold large instruments during critical phases of flight, including turbulence, emergency situations, or evacuation scenarios where loose items can create additional risks.

Cebu Pacific responded by stating that some violin cases met the airline’s cabin baggage size limits and were allowed onboard, while larger cases exceeded the permitted dimensions. The airline said it worked with the musicians by checking oversized cases free of charge while allowing the violins themselves to remain in the cabin.

The incident has renewed discussion about how airlines should balance baggage policies, passenger safety, and the protection of valuable musical instruments. Founded in 1926, the Manila Symphony Orchestra remains one of the Philippines’ most respected cultural institutions and is celebrating its centennial year in 2026.
