A Jetstar Airbus A320 reportedly came dangerously close to a Qatar Airways Boeing 777 on the ground at Sydney Airport early Sunday, August 9, forcing the Jetstar pilots to brake suddenly to avoid a possible collision.
Jetstar flight JQ402, carrying 151 passengers, was taxiing toward the runway for its Gold Coast service when the crew spotted the Qatar Airways 777 being towed across the airport. The aircraft reportedly came within around 50 metres before the Jetstar pilots brought the A320 to an abrupt stop.
The sudden braking injured a Jetstar flight attendant, who was treated by paramedics and reportedly suffered a broken wrist. None of the passengers were injured, but the flight was cancelled and travelers were rebooked onto later services.
Jetstar said its aircraft was following Air Traffic Control instructions when the pilots were forced to brake firmly. An investigation is now underway to determine how the two aircraft came into such close proximity, including whether ground-handling procedures and the tug’s towbar were involved.
