Sri Lanka has renewed efforts to attract investors for the underutilized Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport, aiming to revive its commercial viability after years of limited operations. The government has issued a fresh call for expressions of interest, highlighting the airport’s strategic potential.

Located near Hambantota, the airport lies close to major shipping routes and key tourist destinations. Despite its location advantages, it has struggled financially since opening over a decade ago, earning the label of a “ghost airport” due to low traffic and minimal airline activity.

Authorities are now positioning the facility as a hub for aviation-linked infrastructure and tourism-driven growth. The renewed push is expected to attract private and foreign investors willing to develop and operate the airport more efficiently.

Meanwhile, Bandaranaike International Airport continues to serve as the country’s primary aviation gateway, handling the majority of passenger traffic. The government hopes that new investment will unlock Mattala’s untapped potential and boost regional connectivity.
