Al Blackman, one of the most respected aircraft mechanics in aviation history, continues to inspire the industry after dedicating more than 80 years to airline maintenance. Known as “Blackie,” his remarkable career began in 1942 when he joined American Export Airlines at just 16 years old, earning 50 cents an hour in a sheet metal shop near New York’s LaGuardia Airport.

Over the decades, Blackman witnessed and worked through nearly every major era of commercial aviation. His career started with Sikorsky flying boats before progressing through iconic aircraft including the Lockheed Constellation, Boeing 707, Boeing 747, and eventually the modern Boeing 777. Throughout his lifetime, he reportedly worked on more than 50 aircraft types, an achievement considered extremely rare in the airline industry.

In 2017, after completing 75 years of continuous service, Guinness World Records officially recognized Blackman for the longest career as an airline mechanic. To honor his legacy, American Airlines dedicated a Boeing 777-200 in his name, while mechanics at JFK Airport affectionately nicknamed the aircraft “7BK” in tribute to him.

Even in his nineties, Blackman continued reporting to work at JFK five days a week as a Crew Chief, often arriving hours before his shift simply because of his passion for aviation. When asked why he never retired, his response remained simple and unforgettable: “Why would I quit something I love doing?”

His story is now celebrated across the aviation world as a symbol of dedication, passion, and lifelong commitment to aircraft engineering and airline operations.
