Deportation Flight Meal Choice Sparks Debate.

Ireland’s first chartered deportation flight to Pakistan has sparked controversy after reports revealed that Muslim passengers were initially served meals containing pork during the journey from Dublin to Islamabad in September 2025.

The flight carried 24 Pakistani nationals and was accompanied by a large Garda security escort as part of a government-organized deportation operation. According to an oversight report later released through Freedom of Information requests, passengers were served a traditional Irish breakfast that included pork sausages, with the meal choice later described as “inappropriate.”

Officials stated that halal meal options had been available but were reportedly not formally requested in pre-flight catering documentation. Following the incident, the catering provider is said to have updated its procedures and menu planning to avoid similar issues in future operations.

The same monitoring report noted that the deportation process itself was otherwise conducted professionally and humanely. However, the operation also drew attention over its reported €473,000 total cost, averaging nearly €20,000 per deportee when including transport, security, and logistical expenses.

The incident has since triggered wider discussions surrounding cultural awareness, government contracting procedures, and the challenges involved in organizing large-scale deportation flights.
