An Emirates Boeing 777-300 operating flight EK213 from Dubai to Miami declared a low-fuel mayday emergency after two failed landing attempts at Miami International Airport on Sunday morning. The long-haul flight was carrying up to 328 passengers and had already spent more than 17 hours airborne due to strong Atlantic headwinds.
As the aircraft approached Miami, severe thunderstorms and windshear conditions forced the crew to abandon the first landing attempt on Runway 09. Air traffic controllers later directed the flight toward Runway 12, where weather conditions were believed to be more favorable for landing.
However, during the second approach, another aircraft reportedly failed to vacate the runway in time, forcing the Emirates crew to perform another go-around. Following the second missed approach and worsening fuel situation, the pilots declared a mayday emergency to air traffic control.
The Boeing 777 safely landed on its third attempt shortly afterward without injuries or further incident. The event has drawn attention across aviation circles, highlighting the challenges pilots face during severe weather operations and extended ultra-long-haul flights.
