Norwegian, the budget carrier, has announced an agreement to purchase 10 Boeing 737-800 aircraft that are currently part of its leased fleet. The airline confirmed the transaction on Monday, stating that the deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2025. Initially, the purchase will be funded through the company’s cash reserves, with plans to secure long-term financing once the transaction is completed.
This strategic move is anticipated to provide Norwegian with both short and long-term cost savings. It also offers the airline increased flexibility for future fleet planning, allowing for better management of its aircraft resources.
Geir Karlsen, Chief Executive of Norwegian, emphasized the importance of the purchase, stating, “This move is expected to deliver both short and long-term cost savings, as well as provide additional flexibility for future fleet planning.” By owning the aircraft rather than leasing them, Norwegian aims to enhance its financial position and operational efficiency, aligning with its growth strategies in the competitive airline industry.
